Essay Topics for ESL/ESOL Students!

Here are a few of my favorite essay topics for my ESL/ESOL students. These topics are for upper level ESL/ESOL students, high school and up:

-Write about someone in your life. This could be a family member, a best friend, an idol, or even a stranger that had made an impression on you. Describe this person and explain why you are drawn to them.

-Write about your favorite place. This could be a city, a restaurant, a home, or even a chair you like to read on every night. Talk about why you are attracted to this location.

-Describe your favorite food. Write what it is, how it tastes (use flavors), where it is from, and how to make it. You can also add any memories you have associated with this food (such as: the first time you tried it, if you grew up eating this meal, etc.).

-I am a tourist in your home city. Describe where I should go, what I should see, what I should eat and more. Give directions to and from places.

-Let's compare and contrast! Which is better: reading books or watching movies? Compare and contrast these two. Finally, argue which you think is best.

- Why English? Explain why you are studying English. Where did your idea to do so come from? How long have you been studying English and for how long will you be studying English? Talk about your English journey and where you see it in the future.
