Guidelines for Online Students

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

Remote learning is still new to many of us. Here are some things you should remember while remote learning. Hope these help! Let us know in the comments whether you like in-person or remote learning better!

Be Early - Consider Your "Transit Time"

It's tempting to power-on your computer directly when class starts, but, that's not recommended. Power on your computer at least 15-30 minutes before your first class of the day. Consider this your "transit time". During this "transit time" you should get your computer ready, log-in to your programs, check your audio and video settings. It's also a good idea during this time to get your student's desk ready. Such as, take your notebook out (as you would in a regular classroom) and have a water ready so you won't be getting up in the middle of class.

Be Respectful and Responsive

Many of us feel a disconnect in a virtual classroom, however, there is still a human teacher behind the screen- and classmates too. Please be mindful of your teachers, instructors, or professors and how you communicate (or don't) with them and in the chat-box. As a teacher, trying to reach out to a student that doesn't respond is not only frustrating, it's worrisome, and it's disrespectful. Your teachers do care for you.

Turn Off Your Mic

When you're not speaking or the one using your microphone- Please Mute It. To have a classroom filled with everyone's background noises is very distracting. Just be sure to remember to un-mute yourself when you need to speak.

Remember: This Is Still School

Distance learning can be challenging, especially in a high stress environment which is what we are facing today. It's easy to just snooze your alarm or put off completing assignments or watching lectures. Just remember: This is still school. Your assignments still count towards your overall grade. Also, keeping with a routine while distance learning is key to maintaining normalcy. Try to think of this time as a period to master your digital skills- they will most likely be necessary in the career path you choose for your future.
